You spent hours tailoring your CV, matched every requirement in the job description, and hit 'Apply'. Then nothing — no interview, no rejection, just silence. Chances are, a human never saw it. An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) silently filtered your application before it reached any recruiter's inbox.

Applying to jobs in France with an Anglo-Saxon CV is one of the fastest ways to get filed under 'no'. French recruiters expect a specific format, a rigorous structure, and a formal tone that differ sharply from English conventions. Get it wrong, and you signal you do not understand the local job market — before they even read your experience.

Everyone says the cover letter is dying. The data says otherwise: hiring managers still read them for any role where motivation, culture fit, or career transition matter. What is actually dying is the generic cover letter — the kind that could apply to any company, any role, any candidate.

You found a role that fits. You open a blank document, stare at it, and try to remember how the last cover letter you wrote actually started. Twenty-five minutes later you have three paragraphs that could belong to anyone, and you still have eleven more applications waiting in the tab next door. This is how good candidates lose interviews to mediocre ones who simply submitted on time.

You spent hours rewriting your CV. You polished a cover letter, adjusted the margins, picked the right font. Then, at the moment of sending, you typed eight words into the email body: "Please find attached my CV. Best regards." Career advice tells you to tailor your CV for every single application. The advice is correct. The problem is the arithmetic. A careful rewrite takes 30 to 60 minutes: reading the job description, hunting for keywords, rephrasing bullet points, reformatting the document, checking that nothing broke. Apply to twenty roles in a week and you have spent an entire working day on document editing alone.

Most candidates apply to jobs the same way they buy a lottery ticket: they fill in the form, attach a CV, click submit, and hope. They have no idea whether their application will be read by a human or silently filtered out by an ATS in the first three seconds after upload. By the time the rejection email arrives weeks later, there is nothing left to learn and nothing left to fix.

Here is what happens for most applications. You open a job description, skim the first half, recognize a few keywords, decide you are roughly qualified, then submit. Maybe you tweak two lines of your CV. Total time spent understanding the role: under two minutes. Total time you will spend at this job if you get it: two to four years.

Every job seeker knows the feeling. You spot a role that looks interesting, spend forty minutes tailoring your CV, write a personalized cover letter, click submit, and never hear back. Multiply that by ten applications a week and you have a part-time job with no salary attached. The frustrating part is that most of those wasted hours were predictable. Most CVs are not bad. They are unfinished. The structure is there, the jobs are listed, the dates line up, and the skills section covers the basics.
